Saru is the first Kelpien to leave his planet and therefore also the first Kelpien to join Starfleet. He served with distinction on board the USS Shenzhou and then, later, on the USS Discovery. As the first officer of the Discovery he has often been called upon to take command of the ship in the absence of the Captain, when this has happened he has demonstrated himself as a capable leader. While he initially disagreed with Michael Burnham on most things, they later came to understand and value each other as friends and shipmates.
